More than 1,000 young Western Australians will each stand in front of examiners and perform solo for 20 minutes from today - but it is not for a spot on Australian Idol.
The performances signal the start of the 2004 Tertiary Entrance Examinations (TEE) with WA students undergoing practical exams in Drama Studies.
Education and Training Minister Alan Carpenter said practical examinations would also be held for Music and Languages Other Than English subjects.
The written examinations begin on November 8.
"The TEE season has begun and I wish all 14,585 TEE candidates the best of luck," Mr Carpenter said.
"I encourage students to see the examinations as an opportunity to show the examiners what they know and can do.
"It is also vitally important for families and friends to support those doing their TEE over the next seven weeks.
"Students need to stick to a good study program and keep focussed. However, it is just as important that students maintain a balance between study and leisure activities which can help them relax during the exam period."
The Minister said about two thirds of this year's 21,588 Year 12 students were enrolled with the Curriculum Council to sit at least one TEE subject.
Just over 50 per cent of the Year 12 cohort is doing four or more TEE subjects to gain a Tertiary Entrance Rank and seek admission to a university.
Mr Carpenter said the Drama Studies practical exam comprised an original solo performance, an improvisation on an aspect of the solo performance, a monologue and an interview about the performance.
"These exams will be held during the school holidays at two city venues - Penrhos College and Hale School - and at Albany, Bunbury, Busselton, Geraldton and Kalgoorlie and Port Hedland in the regions."
Mr Carpenter said the TEE subjects with the greatest enrolments continued to be English with 9,407 candidates and Discrete Mathematics with 8,076.
