Telstra ready to Rally Again
9/4/02
Telstra has signed on for another three years as the title sponsor of Western Australia's biggest annual sporting event, Rally Australia, Tourism Minister Clive Brown announced today.
Mr Brown said Telstra's ongoing commitment to the event had been an important factor in Telstra Rally Australia staying at the forefront of world rallying.
"Telstra has been a supporter of the event since 1988 - when mobile phones still looked like phone books and the company was called Telecom - and its long-term support of WA's largest event is a testament to Telstra's commitment to the community," he said.
"An event of Telstra Rally Australia's scale presents many challenges in communication, logistics and technology.
"Over the years, Telstra has played an essential role in the Rally Australia organisation successfully meeting those challenges and delivering technology solutions, which is why we are all pleased to have Telstra back on board again."
Alan Hindes, Telstra's WA key account manager, said Telstra was looking forward to working with Rally Australia again.
"Telstra is very proud of its track record of supporting major international events especially when an event such as Telstra Rally Australia is so important to the local community," Mr Hindes said.
"As a round of the FIA World Rally Championship, Telstra Rally Australia has to satisfy the media and the public's demands for instant, reliable information, no matter how challenging the conditions.
"We are very proud that through our communications systems and by hosting the Telstra Rally Australia website, we play a role in ensuring the demands for information are met."
This year, Telstra Rally Australia celebrates its 15th year, and will be held from October 31 - November 3 in Perth and the forests to the south and east of Perth.
Last year, Telstra Rally Australia generated $20million economic impact for WA. The total economic impact for the last 15 years would be more than $200million.
