Tenders called for Hedland Health Campus
10/12/04
Work on the Hedland Health Campus is expected to start in March next year, with the State Government calling for tenders for stage one of the project this week.
Health Minister Jim McGinty said the first stage involved the construction of a state-of-the-art, 56-bed residential aged care facility, which was estimated to cost about $14million.
Mr McGinty said the new facility would replace the State-owned and managed 30-bed Yulanya Nursing Home and the 12-bed Mirtanya Maya, which was operated by the Town of Port Hedland.
"The new facility will be a separate building and will not form part of a hospital wing, providing a more home-style environment for residents," he said.
"It will provide the latest recreation and dining facilities and consist mainly of single rooms and some twin rooms, giving residents greater privacy and comfort.
"The design of the new facility meets the cultural needs of the various groups of residents and will ensure seniors in Hedland receive the highest level of care."
The aged care facility will be developed in partnership with the community, Town of Port Hedland and health service providers.
Mr McGinty said it had originally been planned to award a construction contract to the successful tenderer in late 2004, but there had been delays in acquiring land and meeting Aboriginal heritage requirements.
The second stage of the project will include the construction of a new $65million regional hospital, which will be located next to private health practitioners, Aboriginal health care organisations and other health services.
Planning on the new hospital is expected to begin in 2005-06.
The new aged care facility will be located in Forrest Circle in South Hedland and is expected to be operating by April, 2006.
