Terence O'Connor QC has been reappointed as chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for a further term ending December 31, 2003.
Premier Geoff Gallop told State Parliament today the reappointment had been made in accordance with the provisions of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act.
The Act requires the advertisement of the position of all members of the ACC and following the recommendation of a committee consisting of the Chief Justice, the Chief Judge of the District Court, and the Solicitor General, the Government made the reappointment.
Mr O'Connor has been chairman of the ACC since August, 1997.
"The recently established Royal Commission into allegations of police corruption will report on any changes to the laws governing investigating agencies to better expose corrupt or criminal conduct," Dr Gallop said.
"Mr O'Connor has accepted a short-term appointment in this instance, as the Royal Commission may recommend changes to the structure and operations of the ACC that will affect the membership of the commission."
Dr Gallop said the Royal Commission was due to report by August 31, 2003 and Mr O'Connor's reappointment would allow four months from the Royal Commission's report to implement any recommended change in structure and operations.
