Trial for inland coach services
1/9/03
The State Government has intervened to ensure continuity of bus services for the next six months between Perth and Port Hedland.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the Government moved to put alternatives into place after current operator McCaffertys Greyhound advised its intention to withdraw the service from August 29.
"It is unfortunate there will be no coach service for the first week of September but the trial period will ensure the service is continued in the short term," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The Government has agreed to provide a subsidy for new operator Integrity Coach Lines, giving the Department for Planning and Infrastructure the opportunity to evaluate the level of demand for this service, and its financial viability."
The Public Transport Authority will oversee the $30,200 trial, starting on September 11.
"The trial will also look at matters such as times and days of travel, the route used and drop-off and pick-up points along the way," Ms MacTiernan said.
"A full review of bus services in the Pilbara will also be undertaken to ensure that the most sustainable and cost effective network of services are in place."
The Perth to Port Hedland inland coach route has been operated by McCaffertys Greyhound since 1979.
