Visitors will learn more about rare and endangered marine turtles in the pristine North-West Cape area, thanks to the opening of a new interpretive centre today by Tourism Minister Bob Kucera.
"The Jurabi Turtle Centre, north-west of Exmouth, is a fine example of a sustainable tourism development in Western Australia," Mr Kucera said.
"The facility will provide community education about turtle conservation and appropriate ways of observing turtles without disturbing them."
The Jurabi Coastal Park is a breeding ground for threatened species of green, loggerhead and hawksbill turtles.
"The Jurabi Turtle Centre will also direct visitors to appropriate places to see turtles, and encourage them to participate in an informative, interactive wildlife experience with qualified guides," the Minister said.
"The centre shows how tourism and conservation can work together to achieve a great outcome."
Mr Kucera said the centre demonstrated the practical way in which the Government was protecting our unique environment for the future, while also giving people the chance to experience nature at its most special.
The $326,350 project had been funded by the State Government, the Shire of Exmouth, the Commonwealth, Woodside Petroleum and MG Kailis Group.
The Minister said the Cape Conservation Group and the Exmouth community had also supported the project through the contribution of volunteers.
The Department of Conservation and Land Management worked in partnership with the Shire of Exmouth to develop the centre, which will be expanded over time to become a fully serviced visitor interpretive facility.
The Gnulli Working Group, representing the traditional owners of the area, had played a crucial role in overseeing the development of the project.
"I would like to congratulate all those involved for creating a wonderful facility," Mr Kucera said.
