The Water Corporation is refurbishing parts of the wastewater system in Guildford, using a process known as 'trenchless technology'.
Engineering firm Drilline Pty Ltd has been contracted to undertake the $400,000 project, which should be completed by the end of April.
Government Enterprises Minister Nick Griffiths said the decision to use 'trenchless technology' would save money, reduce impact on the community and ensure safe, efficient operation of the wastewater system in the future.
"The work will take about six weeks to complete, because the main sewer can be rehabilitated to the required standard without having to dig up and replace the pipeline," Mr Griffiths said.
"If conventional methods were used, it could take up to four months."
The 'trenchless technology' system involves inserting a resin-impregnated flexible pipe into an existing sewer. The pipe is then cured, using hot water, until it becomes hard and forms a seamless, 'pipe within a pipe'.
Through the process, it is estimated the lifespan of a sewer pipe could be extended by at least a further 50 years.
"It is remarkable how little disruption is caused to property, traffic, and the environment compared with conventional methods," the Minister said.
"Although the new technology is catching the interest of a few local residents, this major essential work is in fact going mostly unnoticed."
Similar projects using trenchless technology have already been carried out successfully in Nedlands, Subiaco, Inglewood and Fremantle over the past three years.
