Upgrade plans for Harding River precinct continue
14/4/03
Another stage towards the upgrade of the Harding River Recreation Precinct in Roebourne has been completed with the closing of the public comment period for the draft plan.
Minister for the Pilbara Tom Stephens said a draft plan had been made available to the community for their comment and feedback to ensure the upgrade was reflective of the needs and expectations of the Roebourne community.
"The upgrade of the Harding River Precinct is one of the key projects of the Roebourne Enhancement Scheme," Mr Stephens said.
"It was identified as a priority project by the community, who wish to see the creation of a safe and functional recreation space."
Landscape architects Michael Tooby and Associates held a number of meetings with community members and key stakeholders in Roebourne to ascertain how the space could best be used for the benefit of the community.
Mr Stephens said it was essential the draft plan was in accordance with local objectives.
"Issues such as the need for increased security, lighting, parking and the installation of walk trails to reinforce and celebrate the cultural and historical significance of the Harding River area are the main focus of the plan," he said.
The consultants also identified the importance of providing parking and ablution facilities to capitalise on visitors and passing traffic.
"The addition of walk trails, which would provide visitors with an overview of the history of the area, would encourage people to take the time to stop in the town, providing tourism opportunities," the Minister said.
"The consultant has taken into account the flora and fauna in the area, and has aimed at minimum intrusion to the natural landscape. More trees are to be planted to provide shady areas, with the possibility of 'bush tucker' plants also being reinstated."
Mr Stephens said he hoped the construction and installation of materials for shade shelters, ablution facilities and parking areas would be undertaken by members of the local community to support the strong sense of community ownership over the project.
