The rejuvenation of Bassendean's town centre is under way, with work beginning this week on the $5.5million upgrade to Bassendean station.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said new parking bays would be created and a temporary platform built to enable work to be carried out on the old platform without disrupting train services.
"The State Government will work with Bassendean Town Council to make the railway station a focal point and catalyst for revitalising the town centre," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The new station will support the council's efforts to attract people and businesses to the Old Perth Road precinct."
Bassendean is one of six key stations on Perth's passenger rail network that is being upgraded under the State Government's $23million Building Better Train Stations program.
"As part of Stage One of the works, 149 new bays will be created to the west of the existing car park," the Minister said.
"This will provide public parking while part of the existing car park is closed for modifications and improvements in June.
"Overall, an extra 76 parking spots will be provided, including six parking bays for people with disabilities. We will also have the capacity to provide a secure car parking section in the future."
Ms MacTiernan said to further assist passengers with disabilities, there would be full access to pathways via flush kerbing, while platform improvements would include the installation of tactile paving and an increase in platform height to enable level access to trains.
Bassendean station will also form part of a larger public transport interchange - which includes bus shelters, a taxi bay and sheltered drop-off bays - aimed at improving public transport accessibility in Bassendean through co-ordinated transport services.
As part of this project, the Town of Bassendean and Main Roads WA will undertake road works in Guildford Road and Old Perth Road later this year.

Station users will be notified of parking and access changes via station signs. Residents living near the station will be advised of construction works by letter.
