The strong demand for land at Vasse Newtown shows that the South-West has more to attract communities than just beaches.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan and South-West MLC Adele Farina today attended the launch of the second stage of the innovative Vasse Newtown development near Busselton.
"The development will provide a significant boost to the South-West and deliver ordered planning to an area that is becoming increasingly attractive to residents seeking to move away from major population centres," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The Vasse Newtown development supports the broad principle of encouraging regional growth as a viable alternative to the Perth metropolitan area."
Based around the historic hamlet of Vasse, the new townsite will reduce the pressure placed on coastal centres in the region and, importantly, is identified in the 'Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge Statement of Planning Policy' as a site for growth.
"Vasse Newtown provides opportunities for a self-sustaining community based upon good urban design, delivering environmental benefits and creating employment in the region," the Minister said.
"The development of light industrial land in the plan is a critical part of the project, ensuring the new community is not a satellite dormitory."
The Vasse townsite is situated at the junction of the Busselton Bypass and Bussell Highway, just 10km west of the Busselton Town Centre, and is well connected to the rest of the region.
"This project will deliver carefully planned educational, health and aged care facilities, while also catering for affordable housing to ensure that young residents remain a lively part of this new community," Ms MacTiernan said.
