WA Government kicks off Red Cross Appeal with $25,000 donation
28/2/03
The State Government has kicked off the annual Red Cross Calling campaign with a $25,000 donation.
Red Cross hopes to raise $1million for disaster management during this year's campaign.
Government Enterprises Minister Nick Griffiths said money from the campaign would also help support 25 Red Cross community services throughout the State.
Volunteers will knock on the doors of more than 600,000 homes throughout the State during the month of March.
"Western Australians are renowned for their generosity and compassion," Mr Griffiths said.
"This was amply demonstrated by the response following the Bali bombings and the Farmhand Drought Appeal last year - as well as the response to the bushfires which have ravaged the nation.
"The WA Government recognises that ensuring volunteers are well trained and ready to respond in an emergency is necessary and expensive.
"We encourage all Western Australians to assist the Australian Red Cross in continuing to respond to community needs during a crisis by giving generously to the campaign appeal throughout March."
The Minister said the appeal was part of a national campaign by the Australian Red Cross to raise $8.4million.
The WA target represents an increase of $115,000 on the funds raised in 2002 - recognising the increased demand placed on Red Cross Services in WA over the past 12 months.
