The ILF Lacrosse World Championships held in Perth during July 2002 generated $12.8million for Western Australia, Tourism Minister Clive Brown announced today.
Quoting an independent economic impact report by Market Equity, Mr Brown said this result was an outstanding return on investment of 1:32.
"That is, for every $1 the government invested in this event, the result was $32 of new expenditure in the State," the Minister said.
"This result demonstrates that major events continue to make an important impact on our State."
An estimated 3,700 interstate and international visitors participated in the event, which was held at the UWA Sports Park in Mt Claremont.
The average daily expenditure per person was $190 (excluding airfares) with the average stay being 12 days. Participants listed dining out, shopping and evening entertainment as their predominant activities outside of the tournament, while many people who undertook sightseeing activities said they had visited metropolitan areas such as Fremantle during their stay.
In addition to economic impact of $12.8million, WA will benefit through the promotion of the State through international media coverage of the event; the event participants who might return to Perth as a result of their experiences; and word-of-mouth recommendations from event participants on their return home.
"It is very pleasing to note that of the visitors surveyed at this event, the majority said that they were likely to return to WA and most confirmed that they were likely to recommend the State as a holiday destination to friends and family," Mr Brown said.
Perth will host 12 major events in 2003, expected to generate around $50million in economic impact for the State. The Hyundai Hopman Cup XV started the year of events on the Best On Earth In Perth event calendar, with the next event being the Perth International Arts festival, starting on January 16.
