Nearly 240 traffic locations throughout Western Australia will be made safer under the State's Black Spot Program, worth $18.75million.
Road Safety Minister Michelle Roberts said today that $15million in State funds and a further $3.75million in local government contributions would be spent in 2003-04 on 199 local road and 37 State road projects.
"The Government has again honoured its pre-election commitment and boosted the normal $13million allocation to Black Spots to $15million with an additional $2million from the Road Trauma Trust Fund," Mrs Roberts said.
"This funding is evenly divided between State and local roads and equally spread across rural and metropolitan regions, delivering a fairer deal for all Western Australians."
"The Black Spot Program is another key element in the Government's ongoing road safety strategy to save more lives on our roads."
The Minister said nominations for Black Spot projects were called in July last year. All project submissions were assessed and given a priority in line with the State Black Spot Program development and management guidelines.
"Local government contributes $1 for every $2 put forward by the State Government for local road projects," she said.
"Preliminary approval for the program was given earlier in the year to allow local governments to commence some construction which will ensure these projects are up and running in the financial year."
Mrs Roberts said State-wide, Black Spot projects in 2003-04 included:

  • Installation of traffic signals at the intersection of West Coast Highway and Hale and Brighton Roads, and the Boulevard and improvements to existing signals at Oceanic Drive and West Coast Highway. The project will cost more than $2million and improve driver and pedestrian safety;
  • More than $1million to improve safety at a level crossing on the Coolgardie-Esperance Highway;
  • $300,000 for improvements to Great Northern Highway at Port Hedland;
  • $325,000 for improvements to Albany Highway through the Wheatbelt;
  • $480,000 for various intersection improvements along Bussell Highway near Margaret River;
  • $250,000 for construction of a traffic roundabout at Sanford Road and Minna Street, Albany;
  • $112,000 for construction of a dual use path along Brand Highway at Greenough; and
  • $139,000 for improvements to Perup Road, Manjimup.
The regional funding allocations under the Black Spot Program include:
  • $1.3million for State road projects and $843,798 for Local Roads projects in the Goldfields-Esperance region;
  • $85,000 for State Roads ($131,510 for Local Roads) in the Gascoyne;
