Premier Geoff Gallop today announced the names of 14 Western Australian school students selected to attend ANZAC Day ceremonies in Gallipoli next year.
The Government-sponsored trip is part of the Government's commitment to instilling in Western Australian students a real sense of the importance of ANZAC Day.
Dr Gallop said the tour was an opportunity for young student ambassadors to represent WA at the annual pilgrimage.
"This is an outstanding opportunity for our school students to develop a greater understanding of the significance of ANZAC Day and the ANZAC spirit," he said.
The extensive State-wide nomination and selection process for the 2005 ANZAC Students' Tour began with outstanding students being nominated by their school and was followed by district level finals.
"The students have been drawn from Years 8-11 and reflect a cross-section of country and city schools," the Premier said.

"Schools nominated students who showed excellent interpersonal skills and self-confidence and have an interest in history and knowledge of the ANZAC experience.
"Students nominated to district finals presented a five-minute speech on the topic, 'How is the ANZAC spirit reflected in today's Australia?'

"They were also required to demonstrate their understanding of the positive values exhibited in times of war, the lessons of war for the current generation and the importance of international peacekeeping processes and non-violent means of resolving conflict.

"The students who have been selected will play an important role in helping to keep the ANZAC flame, and what it entails, very much alive.
"Their role will also include sharing their ANZAC experiences with other students at their school and neighbouring schools."
Dr Gallop said the inaugural ANZAC Student Tour in April this year was a great success and 2005 would be even more significant as it marked the 90th anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign.
The 2005 tour to the ANZAC Cove service will take place from April 17 to 27.
If Gallipoli is deemed to be unsuitable to travel to in April, students will attend other ANZAC Day ceremonies in Europe.
The 14 students will come together with their parents in Perth in December for a tour briefing where they will meet and exchange views with students who went on the 2004 ANZAC tour.

The Department of Education and Training is organising the trip.
