WA women to form new vision for the future at first Women's Convention
7/03/02
Women's Interests Minister Sheila McHale today told more than 600 delegates at the State's first Women's Convention that their views would be used to develop strategies to achieve goals that they identified as important.
Topics discussed would be health, safety, family care, seniors, law, opportunity and workplace.
"This convention, Your Future - Your Say, reflects the commitment made by the Gallop Government to work with the community to improve the wellbeing of women in this State," Ms McHale said.
Information collected at the convention would form the basis for ongoing discussions through community engagement forums planned over the next year.
"At these forums, the State Government will work with women, the general community, business and researchers to develop strategies to achieve these goals," Ms McHale said.
"Progress will be monitored in an annual 'Women's Report' to Government, representing women's vision for a better Western Australia."
The Women's Advisory Council would support the process of community engagement.
Ms McHale said the council would provide her with advice on issues emerging from the forums, further refining and revising the goals and strategies through ongoing consultation.
More than 600 women across WA would participate in the two-day event beginning today.
More than 300 women registered to attend the convention in Perth and another 300 from rural and remote communities would participate online.
