War memorial grants now available to help boost pride in military heritage
18/3/04
Community groups, schools and RSL organisations can now apply for grants up to $10,000 to help restore war memorials and honour rolls in their local area.
A 175th anniversary project, the State Government has set aside $250,000 to assist with the restoration of war memorials around Western Australia.
Premier Geoff Gallop said the project was part of a range of initiatives developed by the State Government aimed at promoting community pride in WA military heritage.
"The grants scheme is part of a wider push by the Government to ensure that the observance of ANZAC Day is continued and enhanced in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings in 2015," Dr Gallop said.
"We cannot underestimate the value of our war memorials and honour rolls; they are a permanent reminder of the sacrifices made by WA men and women.
"This project is about ensuring that each new generation of Western Australians honour these people."
Under the scheme, war memorials and honour rolls in most need of restoration and refurbishment will receive priority for funding.
Organisations and groups submitting applications are encouraged to include young people in the development of the application and the management of the project.
Applicants for the grant are also expected to contribute towards the project, financially and/or by providing in-kind support. To be eligible, organisations need to be incorporated or be under the auspices of an incorporated body.
