The State Government has backed a plan that could transform a disused Collie coal mine into a premier water ski and recreational facility for the State.
Minister for the South-West Jim McGinty said the Government was supporting initial work to investigate the development of former Wesfarmers Premier Coal Ltd open cut mine 'Western 5' into a water-based recreational site.
The 2.2km long coal mine located south-east of Collie is up to 70m deep, with a surface area of 100ha and the capacity to hold 30 million cubic metres of water.
"This huge body of water and its surrounds is a unique asset for Collie that can be capitalised on to develop tourism that will attract water enthusiasts to the Collie area," Mr McGinty said.
"Wesfarmers Premier Coal Ltd has a clear vision of transforming the coal mine into a valuable community asset and is currently undertaking extensive rehabilitation work.
"Interest is also being expressed by local developers, who are keen to establish accommodation and recreational facilities at the site."
Initially the project will develop concept plans for the area, investigate site infrastructure needs and obtain all necessary approvals to make the project a success.
"The site is being made ready for recreational use by grading the top slopes of 'Western 5' to give a safe beach effect," Mr McGinty said.
"It is anticipated it will take approximately two to three years for the coal mine's void to fill to its natural water level. However, it is important that planning commences now to ensure this body of water is protected and developed in a sustainable manner."
The South West Development Commission is currently working with a group of interested stakeholders and Wesfarmers Premier Coal Ltd. A Steering Committee has been formed to progress planning for the project.
