Western Australia a hot contender for 2007 World Netball Championships

Western Australia is a step closer to adding another blockbuster event to its 2007 line-up, after it was named as a contender to host the 2007 World Netball Championships.
Tourism Minister Clive Brown said Western Australia had been selected alongside Queensland as potential host State for the lucrative championship event.
"With the 2007-09 Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships already under its belt, WA is looking forward to the chance to add another stellar championship event to the 2007 line-up," Mr Brown said.
"The 2007 World Netball Championships will be contested by competitors from across the world including island nations Samoa and Barbados to larger countries such as Canada, South Africa and the United States.
"The event is estimated to attract 2,600 interstate and overseas visitors to WA and generate an estimated $4.8million in direct spend."
Mr Brown said the successful State would then bid on Australia's behalf against international competitors Fiji and South Africa to host the 2007 World Netball Championships.
"Both the Western Australian and Queensland bids will be presented to the International Netball Federation (INF) in July, with a decision on the Australian host city to be announced on August 16," the Minister said.
"We are committed to attracting major sporting events to WA.
"This outcome will determine whether Western Australia or Queensland will host the championships should Australia win the event over Fiji and South Africa."
