Western Australia to host 12 world-class events in 2003

Western Australia will host 12 major international events in 2003, forming a calendar known as the Best on Earth in Perth.
Announcing the 2003 calendar today, Western Australian Tourism Minister Clive Brown said these events would attract thousands of competitors and spectators to the State.
"These events provide the opportunity for travellers to combine the excitement of witnessing an international event and visiting WA's many natural attractions into a perfect interstate or international travel package," Mr Brown said.
Highlights for 2003 include five games in the Rugby World Cup at Subiaco Oval, including a headline match between South Africa and England, as well as Asia-Pacific's most significant golf tournament, the Johnnie Walker Classic.
Ernie Els and Retief Goosen are already confirmed for the region's richest golfing event, played amid the beautiful natural setting of Lake Karrinyup Country Club.
Other new international events announced as part of the Best on Earth in Perth 2003 calendar include the UCI BMX World Championships (July 19-27), the ISSF Clay Target Shooting World Cup (March 6 -16), the Perth International Golf Tournament (November 14 -17) and the Australian Criterium Championships (January 5). All are expected to attract large spectator numbers from interstate and overseas.
Regular events returning for 2003 are: the Hyundai Hopman Cup (December 28 - January 4), Perth International Arts Festival (January 16 - February 16), the Leeuwin Estate Concert (March), the Salomon Masters @ Margaret River (April), Tri-Nations rugby union test match between Australia and South Africa (August 2) and Telstra Rally Australia (September 5-7).
