Western Australia to observe minute's silence for Alec Campbell State funeral
22/5/02
Premier Geoff Gallop has urged Western Australians to pay their respects to Australia's last Gallipoli veteran by observing a minute's silence on Friday morning.
Dr Gallop said Australia should pause to reflect the ANZAC tradition when Alec Campbell is laid to rest at a State Funeral in Hobart on Friday.
"As a mark of respect for Mr Campbell and for all of his generation who established the ANZAC tradition, flags will be flown at half-mast all day on Friday," he said.
"Further, I am inviting all Western Australians to join in one minute's silence at 9.00am WST, the time of the State Funeral in Hobart.
"There are few legends more important in our nation's history than the ANZAC legend.
"One needs only to observe the growing crowds every year at ANZAC day ceremonies around the country to realise this.
"Mateship, bravery, sacrifice and a healthy disrespect for authority - these are the qualities we associate with the ANZACs and qualities we associate with Australia.
"I believe the half-masting of flags and one minute's silence on Friday is an appropriate way for all Western Australians to be involved and to pay their respects to Mr Campbell and his fellow ANZACs."
