Local Government and Regional Development Minister Tom Stephens today called on people with an interest in bettering their communities to nominate for the local government elections on May 3.
The period for nominations closes on April 3.
Mr Stephens said people should consider putting themselves forward to help make their local community what they want it to be for themselves and their children.
"Local government is the closest level of government to the people in Australia, and we need to be truly representative of all members of our communities," he said.
"I particularly urge women and people with an indigenous or multicultural background to stand.
"They have unique skills and experiences which they can draw on and use help to build stronger and better communities."
Mr Stephens said people considering nominating could borrow from their local government a video and two publications produced to assist would-be candidates.
The video - 'Making a Contribution: Could you be a Local Government Councillor?' - outlines the role and responsibilities of being an elected community representative.
The 24-minute video draws on the personal experience of several long-time councillors and mayors from across the State, and touches on subjects such as conflicts of interest and what's involved in running a campaign.
The publications 'Standing for Council: Information for Candidates' and 'Local Government Elections 2003 - Frequently Asked Questions' both provide practical and easy-to-read advice and information.
Mr Stephens said the video, jointly produced by the Department of Local Government and Regional Development and the WA Local Government Association, was readily available at council offices across the State.
The booklets are also available at local governments and may be obtained from the Department of Local Government and Regional Development website at http://www.dlgrd.wa.gov.au
