Premier Geoff Gallop today announced the winner of the inaugural Summer Reading Challenge at Highgate Primary School in Highgate.
Niloufar Sedigh, a student in Year Three, has won a family holiday to Queensland including return economy airfares, a Three-Park-Super-Pass, plus five nights' accommodation on the Gold Coast.
Dr Gallop made the announcement this afternoon, when he visited Highgate Primary School to congratulate Niloufar on her reading efforts during the summer holidays.
The Premier said being read to, reading or listening to audio books, played an important role in developing language, literacy and social skills.
"Reading does so much for us," he said.
"It stimulates the imagination and creates flexible and lateral thinkers.
"Reading also develops independent learning skills and can help promote an understanding of other cultures and ways of life.
"I hope the Premier's Summer Reading Challenge has helped encourage parents to become more involved in their children's holiday reading and, perhaps, even reignited some of their own passion for reading.
"I urge parents and students to continue the good work that has been started during the summer and to continue to read regularly."
Students from Kindergarten to Year Seven were required to read for 20 minutes a day, or 15 hours in total, during the school holidays. Every student who met the challenge will receive a certificate signed by the Premier and 440 book vouchers will be presented to students across Western Australia.
