World-class fisheries research centre opens at Hillarys

Western Australia is set to enhance its reputation as a world leader in fisheries science with the opening of the $16million WA Fisheries and Marine Research Laboratories at Hillarys.
Premier Geoff Gallop inspected the research and public education centre today, highlighting its important role in the Government's drive to make the State a leader in the marine science field.
"This facility will be a hub for world-class research by Fisheries Department scientists - research which will underpin the sustainable management of WA's billion dollar fishing industries," Dr Gallop said.
"The work done here will also ensure we can preserve our fish stocks into the future, see an abundance of marine life when we go snorkelling or diving, and enjoy fresh and affordable seafood when we dine out or visit our local fish shop."
A feature of the complex is an ocean-fed seawater aquarium system, using the latest filtration technology and computer controls.
The Premier said the department had shown innovation and foresight in the building's design, and created a first for Australia by incorporating public education and tourism within the centre.
The public education facility, to be known as the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre, is expected to open later this year.
Visitors will be able to look through viewing windows into the research areas and the aquariums as scientists work.
The centre will also house school training areas and an interactive exhibition hall.
Dr Gallop said Western Australians had an affinity with our aquatic environment and the lifestyle it offered.
"This is a unique facility and a significant capital works project by the Government," he said.
"It will help ensure that lifestyle is enhanced and will give the community a behind-the-scenes look at how our fisheries are managed for generations to come."
The centre will accommodate up to 160 researchers, Fisheries Department personnel and community education staff.
