Government Enterprises Minister Nick Griffiths announced today that the Lotteries Commission had decided to reinstate the Lotto licence in the town of Wyalkatchem.
The licence to all lottery products, which had operated in the town since 1941, was withdrawn when the previous licensees closed their business late May of this year.
Mr Griffiths said the decision meant that the licence to sell Lotto and other Lotteries Commission products would be reinstated in another local business in Wyalkatchem in the near future.
"The commission took into account that there was no opportunity for prospective buyers of the business owned by the previous Lotto licensees to apply for the Lotto licence before the business was relinquished," he said.
"It's well known that the Lotteries Commission provides crucial funding for a wide range of community services in country areas, such as the St John Ambulance Association, the Royal Flying Doctor Service and Bush Fire Brigades.
"It is important that local people are able to buy the products that raise the funds for such worthwhile services in their community."
The Minister said the commission was currently undertaking a general review of its policies in relation to Lotto licences in country towns.
This review recognises the changing needs of regional Western Australia, and acknowledges that country people are enthusiastic players of Lotto.
