Yiyili Community adds to central Kimberley attractions
9/9/04
New tourism signs on the Great Northern Highway will encourage people to take the 15 km trip to visit the Yiyili Community Aboriginal Corporation's Laarri Gallery on Louisa Downs Station.
Kimberley Minister Tom Stephens said the gallery features the work of acclaimed local artists including Mervyn Street, Katie Leria, Barbara Cox, Margaret Cox, Marjorie Cox and Diane Wallaby
The Minister said the corporation had received a State Government grant of $13,838 towards the project.
"These signs will help ensure an increase in visitor numbers to the gallery and increase general tourism awareness of this part of the central Kimberley," he said.
"I congratulate the Yiyili Community Aboriginal Corporation and its chairman Norman Cox on recognising the importance of attracting more visitors to the gallery and working to develop new tourist attractions."
Mr Stephens said the assistance had been provided from the Community Facilities Grants Program (CFGP) which provided $2million over four years to assist with the development of amenities for local communities and tourists.
Further information on the Community Facilities Grants Program is available from the Department of Local Government and Regional Development on 9217 1500 or visit the website at http://www.dlgrd.wa.gov.au
