York hotel owner urged to explore options
20/05/05
Heritage Minister Francis Logan has urged the owner of an historic York hotel to formulate a plan to preserve the building.
Mr Logan said the Shire of York and the Heritage Council were happy to meet with the owner to discuss the variety of options available to any owner of a significant heritage building.
The Minister stopped the illegal demolition of the 1880s Imperial Hotel by issuing a stop work order yesterday.
The order was issued after the hotel owner stated publicly several times that he planned to demolish the hotel.
"The 42-day stop work order will give all parties involved the time to discuss the various options available," Mr Logan said.
"I urge the owner to meet with the Shire of York and the Heritage Council in the next week, as well as his insurance company, to discuss various options and come up with a rational plan."
Both the Shire of York and the Heritage Council have stated that they are happy to meet with the owner.
"Options are always available - it is just a matter of exploring all rational alternatives, as illegal demolition is not an option," Mr Logan said.
"I am confident that a workable solution can be reached if people meet around the table for a rational discussion."
One option that could be considered is an application under the Heritage Grants Program, where $1million will be distributed this year to private owners of significant heritage sites.
A stop work order provides legal protection against demolition or other types of work which may negatively impact on this important landmark.
