Two outstanding students have won recognition as Western Australia's best young active achievers at this year's Country Week awards.
Rudeshan Pillay, from Hedland Senior High School, and Rachel McDougall, from Narrogin Senior High School, were chosen from a field of 40 nominees for their contribution to school sport and the community.
Sport and Recreation Minister Bob Kucera said the winners, announced yesterday during a ceremony at Challenge Stadium, were identified by their schools as role models who volunteered time and skills to umpire and coach younger children.
"Rachel is passionate about encouraging girls to play sport, while Rudeshan epitomises the importance of physical activity in achieving your goals," Mr Kucera said.
"The awards are a small way in which we can say thanks to these outstanding young people and promote the Smarter Than Smoking message.
"To be nominated, a student must be active in their school or community, display leadership skills, be enthusiastic about their tasks and have represented their school in the 2003 WA Country Senior High School Carnival."
Mr Kucera congratulated all the nominees and finalists for their strong desire to achieve and their dedication to volunteering.
The awards have been run since 1992 by the Department of Sport and Recreation, School Sport WA and Healthway as part of the Country Week Festival of Sport.
