The next step in the revitalisation of Perth's Wellington Street Precinct starts today with the dismantling of the Mitchell Building facade on William Street.
Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said today the facade would be carefully removed and stored to allow work to continue on the new railway station platforms.
"The facade will then be reassembled on the site when the station is complete and the site is being redeveloped," Ms MacTiernan said.
"The site redevelopment may start as early as next year.
"The facade is being cut into nine sections for removal and the dismantling is being carried out in accordance with conditions laid down by the Heritage Council before any excavation work started.
"A large supporting steel framework has been built around the facade by contractors Leighton Kumagai Joint Venture, and two cranes will be used to undertake the work."
Ms MacTiernan said heritage has been a big priority in the revitalisation, which will also see the historic Wellington Building and the Globe Hotel restored to their former glory.
