'Busy Bee' funding for Mt Barker school
South Stirling Primary School in Mount Barker has received funding for a school busy bee under an innovative State Government grants program.
Education Minister Kay Hallahan said the program aimed to encourage parent participation in school improvement projects.
Mrs Hallahan said the program - renewed in the 1992-93 State Budget - was part of the Lawrence Government's unprecedented $75 million, two-year school improvement program.
"Many parents donate their time and labour to special projects at their local school and the grants contribute to the cost of materials," Mrs Hallahan said.
"Grants can be used for a range of projects such as landscaping, outdoor seating, bike enclosures, cricket wickets or playground equipment."
Parents at South Stirling PS received $1,200 to construct a fence at the front of the school to control access.
Mrs Hallahan said the grant would go towards materials and local farmers will donate machinery such as a post hole digger and front end loader.
"The project will improve the appearance of the school and upgrade student safety," she said.
