Olympic high jumper Alison Inverarity is the 1992 Quit Western Australian Sportswoman of the Year.

Announcing the winner at tonight's annual award dinner, Sport and Recreation Minister Graham Edwards said the 22-year-old Inverarity had won because of her outstanding performances in international competition over the past year.

"Alison has enjoyed a very successful year and is now ranked sixth in the world," Mr Edwards said.

"Her overseas victories included the grand prix in Budapest and London and she finished eighth in the Barcelona Olympics."

The Sportswoman of the Year Awards are organised by the Women's Sport Foundation of WA.

Inverarity won ahead of five finalists - Olympic diver Vyninka Arlow, world long-distance swimming champion Shelley Taylor-Smith, WAIS Breakers captain Michele Timms, Olympic cyclist Jacqui Uttien and Olympic athlete Renee Poetschka.

In other awards, WAIS gymnastics coach Liz Chetkovich won the Quit Coach of the Year, the WAIS Breakers were named Quit Team of the Year and Vyninka Arlow was chosen as Quit Junior Sportswoman of the Year for the second year in a row.

The Women's Sport Foundation President's Award was presented to former champion gymnast Michelle Saliba for her work with WSF over the past two years as a volunteer and board member.
