Ashburton by-election to be held April 4

Premier Carmen Lawrence today announced that the by-election for the Legislative Assembly seat of Ashburton would be held on Saturday April 4.

"This is the earliest available date for the by-election and the cost will be offset by the referendum on daylight saving being held on the same day", Dr Lawrence said.

Formal proceedings were initiated today and the electoral roll will close at 6.00 pm on March 12.

"I urge all eligible voters to ensure that they are correctly enrolled before the rolls close," Dr Lawrence said.

"While by-elections typically produce significant swings against Government, we will be working very hard to win back the seat.

"The Government is committed to the future of the Pilbara and Fred Riebeling will be a strong representative of Ashburton in State Parliament."

The Premier said candidates had until March 12 to nominate for the by-election.
