The RSPCA today celebrated 100 years of service to animals in Western Australia.

Opening the RSPCA/Perth Zoo Fun Day, Local Government Minister David Smith congratulated the RSPCA for its work.

"The society has a long history and commitment to the welfare of animals throughout the State," Mr Smith said.

"The need for RSPCA services has been increasing over recent years.

"Last year the society performed an average of 950 jobs a month."

"This year the rate has jumped to more than 1,000 jobs a month."

Mr Smith said inspectors were being called in to assist about 440 sick, injured or stray animals a month.

"They also deal with many complaints from the public regarding animal cruelty, neglect and mistreatment," Mr Smith said.

"The State Government's recently formed animal welfare advisory committee will review the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

"It will work closely with the RSPCA in reviewing the Act."

Mr Smith said education was one of the most important roles for the RSPCA.

"The RSPCA's work has resulted in animal welfare being included in many schools' curricula.

"It also runs seminars for the public, promoting responsible pet ownership."

Mr Smith said the RSPCA/Perth Zoo Day coincided with National All Creatures Day.

"I urge the public to assist the RSPCA to continue its invaluable work long into the future," Mr Smith said.
