Edward Millen Home to be placed on heritage register

"In 1920, the Commonwealth Government acquired the hospital and extended and modernised it as a satellite of Hollywood Repatriation Hospital," he said.

The historic Edward Millen Home in East Victoria Park is to be placed on Western Australia's Register of Heritage Places.

Heritage Minister Jim McGinty said he had directed the Heritage Council of Western Australia to enter the two-storey brick building on the register.

"The building's cultural heritage significance is well documented and it is a dominant landmark in the Victoria Park community," Mr McGinty said.

Victoria Park MLA and local historian Dr Geoff Gallop welcomed the listing - describing the building as 'historically important'.

Dr Gallop said the Home had its beginning in 1912 when Mrs Elizabeth Baillie built the 'Rotunda Maternity Hospital'.

"In 1920, the Commonwealth Government acquired the hospital and extended and modernised it as a satellite of Hollywood Repatriation Hospital," he said.

"The building was then renamed Edward Millen Home - after the Minister for Repatriation at the time," Dr Gallop said.

The building is set back from Albany Highway and has a two-storey verandah on three sides and an imposing entry tower.

Internally, the building has a fine jarrah staircase and pressed metal ceilings.

Mr McGinty said the inclusion of Edward Millen Home on the Register of Heritage Places was part of a move to have hundreds of buildings listed over the next few months.

"The cultural heritage of Western Australia is all important and its preservation will remain a priority with the State Government," he said.

"The Heritage Council will identify and register thousands of historic buildings with a view to their preservation as constant reminders of our State's colourful past."
