Introduction of 'custom' licence plates

Western Australian motorists will get further opportunities for something different in the way of licence plates with the introduction soon of 'custom plates'.

The new concept, announced today by Police Minister Graham Edwards, will enable vehicle owners to choose any word they like on their licence plates.

But there will be constraints.

"Any words considered offensive or which conflict with the promotion of road safety will be refused at the discretion of the Traffic Board," Mr Edwards said.

Custom plates, for instance, could bear the names of sporting clubs or the owner's initials, job description, hobbies or special interests.

The plates will be available in a choice of metal or polycarbonate, varying sizes and colours and will cost up to $250.  Applications can be made after November 30.

"The introduction of special licence plates has been very popular with Western Australians, particularly those plates tied to the West Coast Eagles and the Perth Wildcats," Mr Edwards said.

"The decision to issue custom plates has been the result of many requests from the public to broaden the range of licence plates even further."

Mr Edwards was in Forrest Place today for the ballot of the latest series of plates commemorating the Eagles AFL victory.

Police Licensing and Services received 303 applications from people nominating the plate number they wanted.

After the ballot about 600 plates will still be available for $300 each.  Half the money raised will be spent on Community Policing initiatives.

Information about the Eagles plates and the new custom plates can be obtained from any police licensing branch.
