Major redevelopment planned for Maylands site

Housing Minister Jim McGinty said an earlier purchase of an adjoining parcel of land would enable Homeswest to construct up to 140 homes on the amalgamated site.

The State Government is planning a major redevelopment project in Maylands following its purchase of a 2.25 hectare industrial site for $1 million.

Housing Minister Jim McGinty said an earlier purchase of an adjoining parcel of land would enable Homeswest to construct up to 140 homes on the amalgamated site.

"Homeswest will build the homes in a variety of styles and densities following guidelines set out in the Federal Government's Better Cities program," Mr McGinty said.

"Many of the homes will be sold to private buyers to fund further land purchases with the balance retained as public rental housing."

The 4.5 hectare site is on the corner of Whatley Crescent and Ferguson Street.

Mr McGinty said construction of a mix of grouped and single detached housing would begin in 1994-95 - subject to rezoning approval and public comment.

"The redevelopment will incorporate innovative yet affordable housing for a cross-section of the community," he said.

"Almost two thirds of Homeswest's building program is now geared towards redeveloping inner-city areas.

"The benefits include better use of existing infrastructure and a slowing of Perth's rapid urban sprawl."

Mr McGinty said Homeswest would continue to lease the two sites to existing tenants until rezoning approval was granted.
