New Enterprise self-employment scheme a success
Hundreds of new businesses have been set up in Western Australia as a result of an innovative Government scheme to help the unemployed become self-employed.
Training Minister Kay Hallahan said the Government's New Enterprise scheme helped to establish 156 businesses in the last financial year, generating 222 new jobs.
Mrs Hallahan said enterprise training was provided to 600 unemployed people and more than 3,500 people were given advice on self-employment.
"Under the scheme, unemployed people receive assistance to turn their business ideas into a business plan before approaching banks for finance," Mrs Hallahan said.
"Businesses developed through the New Enterprise scheme are twice as likely to succeed as other small businesses, because they are rigorously assessed."
Businesses set up under the New Enterprise scheme include TV and video servicing; a mobile panel beating and welding service; import/export agency; photographic studio and a medical equipment installation and maintenance service.
Mrs Hallahan said the Lawrence Government allocated more than $400,000 in the 1992-93 State Budget to support the scheme.
