No decision yet on apple scab eradication scheme

The question of whether further assistance should be given to growers to continue the apple scab eradication program is currently being considered by the Government, Agriculture Minister Ernie Bridge said today.

The question of whether further assistance should be given to growers to continue the apple scab eradication program is currently being considered by the Government, Agriculture Minister Ernie Bridge said today.

"I recognise that significant costs have been borne by growers, and I commend them on the responsible way they have acted in tackling this problem," he said.

"Growers cannot be accused of shirking their responsibilities in any way.  They are continuing to fund the eradication program through the levy imposed on growers generally.

"However, the Government has previously assisted with chemical costs and other aspects of the campaign, and the growers have asked that consideration be given to providing additional assistance."

Mr Bridge said he would advise growers as soon as a decision was reached.
