Review of fitness industry code of practice (A/Min)

The Western Australian Government is to review the health and fitness industry code of practice.

The Western Australian Government is to review the health and fitness industry code of practice.

The code, which is mandatory, was introduced in 1989 after upheavals in the industry.

"The code of practice is part of the Fair Trading Act, and is being reviewed after three years in operation," acting Consumer Affairs Minister Judyth Watson said today.

"The WA Fitness Industry Association and the State Government worked together in developing the code," Dr Watson said.

"A management committee hears queries and complaints about the industry's operation, and refers any complaints that it is unable to resolve to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs.

"The code and the committee give health club members much greater confidence and protection than previously."

Key points in the code of practice include: a ban on the sale of life memberships by health and fitness clubs; operators must provide clear and easy to understand membership agreements; and all advertising must disclose the price of services in a truthful and accurate manner.

"Written submissions are invited from groups and individuals involved in, or interested in, the health and fitness industry in Western Australia," Dr Watson said.

Copies of the code and further information are available from: John Thurtell, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, (09) 222 0644.

Submissions to the review should be sent to: Hon. Yvonne Henderson, MLA, Minister for Consumer Affairs, 13th Floor, Dumas House, 2 Havelock Street, West Perth 6005.

Submissions close on February 28.
