Rights of consumers when returning gifts

Consumers should be aware of their rights and responsibilities when returning gifts after Christmas, says Consumer Affairs Minister Yvonne Henderson.

Consumers should be aware of their rights and responsibilities when returning gifts after Christmas, says Consumer Affairs Minister Yvonne Henderson.

"Retailers are not under any obligation to accept the return of goods just because the customer does not want them or they are the wrong size," Mrs Henderson said.

"However, a consumer can always take a product back for a refund if it is faulty or defective.

"A product can also be returned if the shop assistant has given a shopper the wrong item or the wrong advice on what a product was suited for."

Mrs Henderson urged consumers to remain polite but firm when dealing with a store and to talk to the manager if there were any problems.

"Many stores will give consumers a credit note to the value of the returned goods if they want to return a gift, even if it is not faulty," Mrs Henderson said.

"But consumers should remember the trader is not compelled to do this and is trying to maintain goodwill and custom.

"If consumers have any problems they should call Consumer Affairs on (09) 222 0666."
