Broadcaster, writer and science guru Robyn Williams is expected to spark debate on the role of museums in Western Australia at a public lecture tonight.

Arts Minister Kay Hallahan said Mr Williams was invited to Perth to discuss science, research and the role of museums in today's society as part of the debate over the future of Western Australia's museums.

Mrs Hallahan said the lecture followed the release of a 300-page report on future directions for museums in WA.

"The report, which recommends a major shake up of museums and an overhaul of museum policy, is open for public comment until the end of August," she said.

Mr Williams is head of the ABC Science Unit and president of the Australian Museum.

The lecture will be at 6.30 pm at the Alexander Library Building Theatre.
