Work resumed on identifying Rottnest grave sites

Work has resumed on the scientific identification of possible Aboriginal grave sites on Rottnest Island.

Work has resumed on the scientific identification of possible Aboriginal grave sites on Rottnest Island.

Ground probing radar equipment is being used to determine whether there is a second cemetery north of the confirmed Aboriginal grave site located just south of the area known as 'tentland'.

The resumption of ground radar testing follows the construction of a boundary fence around the known cemetery to mark the area and protect it from desecration.

The ground testing is being carried out by Aboriginal workers from different communities and staff from the Department of Aboriginal Sites and Curtin University.

Aboriginal Affairs Minister Judyth Watson said today radar technology was chosen for scientific testing on Rottnest Island because it caused the least amount of ground disturbance - which was in line with Aboriginal wishes.

Ground testing should be completed next week but it would be several weeks before the data was analysed and the results known.

Dr Watson said the long-term plan was to consult with Aboriginal people on a suitable commemoration of the cemetery.
