BHP rail donation helps Pilbara students stay on track
- BHP donates 53 metres of rail track to Hedland Senior High School
- Donation will assist students in learning real life skills and training in rail installation
- Premier congratulates BHP on plans to create about 15 new rail apprentice and trainee positions in 2018
Premier Mark McGowan visited Hedland Senior High School today to hammer in the last piece of rail on a 53-metre track donated to the school by BHP.
At 53 metres in length and valued at $280,000, it is the biggest rail installation of its kind at an Australian high school.
The rail track will provide students with the unique opportunity to learn new job-ready skills and graduate with hands-on experience in rail installation.
It follows the commitment from BHP earlier this year to double the intake of apprenticeships and traineeships to 200 in 2018, creating new job opportunities for young Western Australians.
Of those, about 15 positions will be for rail apprentices and trainees.
The McGowan Labor Government and BHP are working together to put in place more apprentices and local jobs for Western Australians.
Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:
"I congratulate BHP on their donation of rail track to Hedland Senior High School and their commitment to increase their intake of rail trainees.
"This donation will ensure students have the opportunity to learn real life skills and graduate with hands-on experience.
"Upon being elected as Premier, I met with mining companies and indicated I would like to see more job and training opportunities for Western Australians and the response has been encouraging.
"My Government will continue to implement its Plan for Jobs, which has a focus on creating more jobs on resources projects and more training and opportunities for young Western Australians."
