Creative primary and high school children from across Western Australia are invited to help name and decorate the machinery which will tunnel the $1.86 billion Forrestfield-Airport Link, as part of METRONET.

The first of the project's two TBMs will begin its shipping journey to Perth in the next week, with the second due to arrive later this year.

All WA students from kindergarten to Year 12 are eligible to enter and be part of METRONET.

Students who submit the winning name and artwork will be invited to the official launching ceremony, have their submission displayed on the machinery, get to see behind the scenes of the project and have their photograph taken next to the seven-metre tall TBM.

Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"This is a great opportunity for WA students to be part of our METRONET vision for Perth.

"Before the TBMs can start digging the eight kilometres of underground tunnels, they each need a name.

"We're looking for a name for each TBM which relates to the student, their community, transportation or engineering - submissions can be as creative as participants like - they can even be made-up names.

"We're also looking for children with artistic flair to decorate the sides of our TBMs with artwork, showing how the new underground rail line will benefit their community."
