End-of-July deadline for free universal access keys
- Universal key to provide access to Australian network of Changing Places
- Free keys available until July 31, 2018
A free key to unlock a national network of all-abilities toilet facilities is now available to people with disability, thanks to State and local government funding.
The Master Locksmith Access Key free offer was launched today by Disability Services Minister Stephen Dawson at BP's The Lakes roadhouse in Chidlow.
The key and locking system ensures the facilities - called Changing Places - are safe and secure when not in use, and are available to those who need them.
National Disability Services (NDS) Western Australia will offer the keys for free to current holders of a WA Companion Card until July 31, 2018, with funding from the WA Local Government Association and Department of Communities. People who do not have a current WA Companion Card will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
A Changing Place is an accessible and customised public bathroom for people who cannot use universal access toilets. The facility includes a ceiling hoist, adult changing table, secure automatic door and space for two support people.
There are about 200,000 Australians with disability who require assistance to meet their bathroom and personal hygiene needs. Without appropriate public facilities, their options are limited and their opportunities to actively participate in community life restricted.
BP was the first corporation to build a Changing Place in WA, which opened at The Lakes roadhouse in 2016. This achievement was made possible following significant collaboration with the Shire of Mundaring.
Comments attributed to Disability Services Minister Stephen Dawson:
"Changing Places break down barriers and help ensure people can access convenient and appropriate public restroom facilities that meet their needs when away from home.
"The growing network of Changing Places helps to increase options for people with disability, their families, carers and friends when making plans to travel throughout WA and interstate.
"The NDS WA offer is a fantastic chance for current WA Companion Card holders to access a free key that will unlock most Changing Places in Australia to date, as well as universal accessible toilets and playground equipment using the same key system.
"I congratulate all parties involved in this initiative for their leadership in providing accessible and inclusive facilities that reflect the diverse needs of our community."
