Expanded testing programme for COVID-19

The McGowan Government has expanded options for Western Australians to get tested for COVID-19.
  • GPs can now refer patients to private pathology providers for COVID-19 testing
  • COVID-19 private collection centres to begin operating tomorrow
  • More than 25,000 Western Australians have so far tested negative for COVID-19

The McGowan Government has expanded options for Western Australians to get tested for COVID-19.

From tomorrow, patients with a GP referral can be tested at 11 private pathology collection centres across the Metropolitan area.

Clinipath, Western Diagnostics and Australian Clinical Labs have dedicated these collection centres for COVID-19 testing.

The new services are in addition to the McGowan Government's COVID Clinics operating at seven hospital sites across the metropolitan area and at the Bunbury Health Campus and Broome Hospital, as well as at emergency departments in regional and metropolitan WA.

The expansion of the testing service means people will have more options, close to where they live. This is a pre-emptive measure to ensure the availability of facilities and prompt diagnosis can occur as winter and the influenza season approaches.

People who meet the testing criteria can now either present at a COVID Clinic or visit their GP to get a referral to one of the private pathology collection centres. People can also get a referral through a GP telehealth consultation.

People in regional and remote areas can continue to present to over 100 public hospitals, health services or remote area health clinics for testing.

Comments attributed to Health Minister Roger Cook:

"PathWest is doing a fantastic job providing testing services for Western Australia. The private pathology providers will bolster these efforts and further increase the options for people in WA to get tested.

"We are doing all that we can to make testing available to people who are concerned they might have COVID-19.

"Patients with a GP referral can attend their closest dedicated COVID-19 collection centre and be reassured they will be tested straight away, and their results processed as soon as possible."
