Federal Labor locks in GST deal for Western Australia
- Bill Shorten reaffirms commitment to deliver a 70c floor in the GST from 2019-20 and rising to 75c in 2024-25
- The McGowan Labor Government secures GST reform from both sides of politics
The Federal Opposition has today pledged to lock in a GST floor, delivering a fair share of the GST for Western Australia.
Following the GST announcement last month by then Treasurer Scott Morrison, the Federal Opposition has today reaffirmed its commitment to deliver on GST reform.
The commitment will see a 70c floor from 2019-20 and 75c from 2024-25 as a permanent feature of the Horizontal Fiscal Equalisation (HFE) system.
Importantly, this funding is additional to the $3.154 billion infrastructure commitments included in the 2018-19 Federal Budget.
As announced by the Federal Government, the funding payments to deliver the GST floor are exempt from the GST distribution system and are untied - meaning the State Government is able to spend the money as required.
Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:
"Bill Shorten and Federal Labor have led the way on delivering a fair share for WA.
"Their announcement today is another victory for Western Australia, delivering a permanent solution to the GST issues.
"I look forward to now seeing the GST floor implemented and the GST system reformed for the benefit of the whole country."
Comments attributed to Treasurer Ben Wyatt:
"Importantly, for Western Australia, we have clear commitments from both sides of politics.
"Federal Labor's plan guarantees WA will receive our fair share and gives us the certainty we need to continue our Budget planning."
