  • Appointment will become effective from May 7, 2018 for a five-year term

Attorney General John Quigley has congratulated Graham Hill on his appointment to the position of director of the Legal Aid Commission.

Mr Hill has spent the past four years leading and managing Legal Aid Tasmania in the same capacity.

Mr Hill has been appointed as director following the retirement of George Turnbull.

Comments attributed to Attorney General John Quigley:

"Mr Hill brings to this role significant experience in the legal profession.

"He was admitted to practice in 1990 and served for a year as an Associate to a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, before spending 14 years in private practice in Melbourne.

"For eight years, Mr Hill headed the legal branch of the Department of Premier and Cabinet in Victoria. In that role, he handled all litigation against the department and the Premier, managed the Premier's legislation through Parliament, and gave legal and legal policy advice to the Premier.

"In 2014, Mr Hill was instrumental in helping Legal Aid Tasmania set a comprehensive new direction.

"As a result of his vision and hard work, he and his team successfully attracted more funding to the organisation and brought its budget to a historically high level.

"I am confident that Mr Hill's skills and experience will enable him to ensure the Commission continues to adequately deliver important legal services in our community.

"I congratulate Mr Hill on his appointment and wish him every success in his new role.

"I thank former director George Turnbull, who retired in July 2017, for his contribution to the Commission, and Lex Payne who took on the role of acting director during that period.

"I would also like to acknowledge the Commission's Chair, Jane Crisford and the Board for their assistance in the recruitment process."
