The Independent Living Centre Western Australia (ILC) will strengthen its services for people with disability, thanks to funding from Lotterywest.

Disability Services Minister Stephen Dawson today presented two grants totalling $4.8 million to the organisation.

More than $2.4 million will enable the ILC to continue to provide its Disability Equipment Grants program, which started in 2003.

This program assists people to access equipment they need to live independently, which cannot be funded through the usual funding avenues. Last year, the ILC provided more than 740 equipment grants to assist people living in the community.

A further grant of $2.3 million will be used to refurbish The Niche Lotteries House, creating jobs within the construction and IT industries.

Planned works include improving the building's common areas, upgrading technology, updating the ILC's equipment display and creating private consulting spaces.

The Niche is home to the ILC, Neurological Council of WA and Cystic Fibrosis Association of WA.

The ILC provides a range of services across the State, including community allied health, home modifications, carer support and respite, assistive technology and equipment, occupational therapy driver assessment, and Home and Community Care regional assessments and equipment.

Comments attributed to Disability Services Minister Stephen Dawson:

"These grants will help ensure people with disability can access resources that support them to live the life they want.

"I congratulate the ILC for its commitment to providing comprehensive services to people with disability in WA. It is fantastic to see such positive activities being undertaken in our community by organisations such as the ILC.

"I also applaud the work of Lotterywest as it continues to make a positive difference to local communities through its grants program."
