New Lord Street project works underway
- New Lord Street to relieve congestion for Ellenbrook, Brabham and Dayton residents
- Upgrade will more than double the capacity of one of Perth's most congested roads
- Project team is on-site and preparatory works are underway
The preparatory works to fix one of the most congested roads in Perth's north-eastern corridor are underway, with the New Lord Street project team now on-site.
Early works, including relocating utility services, site and foundation preparation and building a temporary access road to Whiteman Park, have commenced.
The initial works will continue through until the end of the year, paving the way for heavy construction to begin early in the new year.
Upon completion in October 2018, the New Lord Street project will provide a dual carriageway between Reid Highway and Gnangara Road.
The project will include roundabouts at the intersections of Park Street and Youle-Dean Road, a shared path to improve access to Whiteman Park, a new bus station and bus priority measures.
The upgrade will relieve pressure on the existing Lord Street, a single carriageway used by about 14,000 vehicles a day.
The southbound approach to the Marshall Road roundabout is a well-known congestion hot spot, with commuters experiencing queues of up to 2.5 kilometres during morning peak hour.
Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:
"We are fulfilling our commitment to the north-eastern suburbs to improve roads and deliver METRONET.
"The New Lord Street project, together with NorthLink WA and the future Reid Highway upgrade between Altone Road and West Swan Road, will significantly increase road capacity and cut journey times for residents.
"These projects will complement the METRONET Ellenbrook rail line which will connect some of Perth's fastest growing suburbs to our rail network."
Comments attributed to Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"The project is an important election commitment and will bring much-needed congestion relief for residents of Ellenbrook, Brabham and Dayton.
"We look forward to the timely completion of early works and the transition to construction in the new year."
Comments attributed to Swan Hills MLA Jessica Shaw:
"I speak to local residents all the time who express their frustration about Lord Street. It's ridiculous that it can take 25 minutes to travel two kilometres.
"I can't wait to see this project completed and am particularly excited that it paves the way for the Morley-Ellenbrook rail line.
"It's great to be part of a team that's finally delivering for the people of Ellenbrook."
