New on-the-job traineeship announced for pet groomers
- Western Australia to be among the first in Australia to offer pet grooming traineeship
- The McGowan Government listened to growing industry calls for formal and nationally recognised on-the-job training
- Qualifications to support business expansion and increased job opportunities
A new traineeship in pet grooming to begin this month will give Western Australians on-the-job training in a salon environment.
The Dog Groomers Association of Western Australia called for the creation of the traineeship pathway to create entry-level job opportunities, improve industry standards and protect pet owners from untrained operators.
The industry found pet owners, salon owners and other pet businesses were finding it difficult to find experienced groomers, with skilled groomers booked out months in advance.
Pet grooming is a highly practical profession that lends itself perfectly to employment-based training.
The new traineeship pathway will support business expansion and provide increased job opportunities.
South Metropolitan TAFE will support businesses to deliver the traineeship from Semester 2, 2018.
The new Jobs and Skills Centres can provide assistance to those who would like to undertake a traineeship pathway but do not have an employer.

Comments attributed to Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
"The McGowan Government is committed to providing training for Western Australians where we know there is industry demand - so qualifications result in jobs.
"The pet grooming industry told us a traineeship was needed to provide entry level employment opportunities and increase the number of employees with formal qualifications.
"This traineeship will mean Western Australians can learn on the job, gaining valuable experience and earning an income, and owners will have confidence their pets are being looked after by professionals."
